I was a high school student in the 1960s in San Diego, CA. I remember standing in front of Safeway on weekends urging people to boycott grapes and lettuce in support of the UFW. For years I didn’t buy lettuce or grapes at a grocery store. I learned to grow my own lettuce and now buy organic lettuce and grapes (when available) from local farmer’s markets.
I became a bilingual teacher and for 30 years I have included lessons about Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta and the UFW. I have used some UFW materials and the Teaching Tolerance video celebrating farmworkers. I met Maria Rifo, a former secretary to Cesar Chavez, and brought her to talk to all of our third grade students.
