Chavez was a major inspiration to me. I grew up in an agricultural state (Idaho) where there were Mexican farm workers who were treated quite badly. I remember seeing “No Mexicans or Dogs Allowed” signs. They lived in horrible farm labor camps. As a result of Chavez’ efforts, I didn’t eat grapes for more than 10 years. Each time there was a boycott, I also boycotted. His tactics inspired me to examine the life of Mahatma Gandhi, whom I have come to regard as the inspiration for that whole generation of US leaders. I have realized it is the only way to change that lasts. Sí se puede.
