I have been contacting my California Legislators for at least the last ten years to encourage them to pass laws which protect California’s farmworkers in the fields. I don’t think they know that the laws relating to grape pickers and other field workers are not as strong as they could be, and even the laws on the books are often ignored by the growers. The issues facing fieldworkers are about life and death. Working out in the Californnia sun for ten hours at a time with inadequate shade and water, and insufficient rest breaks, still causes serious dehydration and even death to farmworkers every year. They are unnecessary deaths, and we need to stop them.
